Adverse effects of topically applied anesthetics include but are not limited to:
- Variable systemic absorption and potential systemic toxicity if applied to large areas of the skin or to dermabraded skin
- Systemic toxicity of anesthetics may lead to CNS stimulation and/or depression (seizures, respiratory arrest) and cardiovascular depression (low heart rate, hypotension, arrhythmias) that may result in coma and death
- Burning or stinging sensation at the administration site

- Skin discoloration
- Swelling
- Tissue necrosis and sloughing
- Methemoglobinemia (with topical prilocaine)
- Topical or systemic allergic reaction
