Topically Applied Anesthetics

Adverse effects of topically applied anesthetics include but are not limited to:

  1. Variable systemic absorption and potential systemic toxicity if applied to large areas of the skin or to dermabraded skin
  2. Systemic toxicity of anesthetics may lead to CNS stimulation and/or depression (seizures, respiratory arrest) and cardiovascular depression (low heart rate, hypotension, arrhythmias) that may result in coma and death
  3. Burning or stinging sensation at the administration site
    • Skin discoloration
    • Swelling
    • Tissue necrosis and sloughing
    • Methemoglobinemia (with topical prilocaine)
    • Topical or systemic allergic reaction
